Vole Damage

Mary Ann Hansen, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Bugwood.org
Voles are small rodents that look like mice, except with shorter tails and beady eyes. Voles live throughout the Northern Hemisphere and are often considered agricultural pests because they eat vegetation. They have no problem foraging straight through Knock® Out roses or eating the bark off of lilacs. There are basically 2 kinds: above-ground (usually the Meadow Vole in our area) and below-ground that chew through roots and damage them with their tunneling.

Interesting note: it is the fastest evolving species. Voles are evolving 60-100 times faster than the average vertebrate in terms of creating different species. Natural predators are cats, hawks, owls, snakes.
