Lightning Strike

Lightning Strike on Tree, Potomac MD
Sam Fisher, Wood Acres Tree Specialists
Lightning can generate temperatures more than 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit and an electrical charge of 100 million volts - and can severely damage or kill a tree. A tree's biological functions and/or structural integrity are affected by lightning strikes: sap boils, creates steam and cells explode in the wood leading to strips of wood and bark peeling o being blown off the tree. Many trees can be injured internally or below ground in the roots with no external visible symptoms. Consult with an arborist for lightning protection systems if your trees have historical value or is are integral in your landscape.Lightning Protection Systems dissipate the electrical charge before it can build to high levels.
