Improper Soil pH
The pH scale is a method of measuring the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. It is important to maintain a proper pH balance since the plant's ability to absorb nutrients is directly affected by the chemical composition of the soil. Improper soil pH can prevent the uptake of certain essential elements.
Some plants have very a narrow pH range. Blueberries and rhododendrons require an acidic soil (low pH value) while native desert species such as the yucca and cacti, grow in alkaline conditions (high pH value). Most food crops tolerate a range of pH levels near the middle of the scale, say 6.0 to 7.0. Talk to a professional about having your soil tested for the maximum health of your plants.
