Eastern Grey Squirrel
Grey squirrels are notorious for “attacking” shade trees during the weeks prior to leaf drop. They litter the ground beneath trees with twigs less than 1/4 inch diameter after chewing them off and letting them drop to the ground. Most likely squirrels are cutting branches to get acorns to the ground or use of twigs and leaves for nesting materials (better for nesting with leaves attached).
