Drought Stress
Drought takes its toll, too. You can help by watering trees during dry spells, especially when the buds are ready to leaf. Moisture extremes can seriously damage plants. Keep an eye out for yellowing of inner leaves and leaf drop.
Drought stressed plants give off volatiles that are detected by boring insects. White pines are very shallow rooted and are more susceptible to drought injury and borer attack.
